Travelling Folk in the 1930s

Between 1937 and 1939, primary school pupils across the Republic of Ireland interviewed the elderly in their neighborhood to collect and record local stories and folklore from the 19th century. "The Schools Collection" as it became known is held by the Dúchas Folklore Collection in UCD and is and has been digitized online at duchas.ie. One of the topics schoolchildren were asked to write about were "Travelling Folk" or An Lucht Siúil.

Here is a selection of what "settled" children wrote about travelers in the late 1930s.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People 1959 Movie Premiere

In 1959, Disney's Irish-themed movie "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" premiered in Dublin. Most of its stars were Irish actors, save for Scotsman Sean Connery (who became James Bond three years later). Walt Disney himself was of Irish extraction; his great-grandfather Arundel Elias Disney emigrated to America from Gowran, Co Kilkenny, in 1823. Connery, the film's last surviving actor, passed away on Halloween 2020.

Seeking information on Thomas Farrell, his son Patrick born 1846 or 1847 and his wife who was a Shee

I am Robert Rearick. I inherited my artistic ability (robert-rearick.pixels.com) from my Great Uncle Mortimer (Mort) Farrell. I live in Lakewood, Ohio USA. Mort's Grandfather, Thomas's history is my quest. When was Thomas Born? He married a woman of the last name Shee and was a Legal Assistant. His brother, name unknown, is another question? Where did Thomas study law?
