Honora Rafter was born on February 9, 1796, in Kilkenny, Ireland, her parents were Richard Rafter and Catherine Whelan. She married Daniel Phelan on February 21, 1814, in St-Canice's Roman Catholic Church in Kilkenny City. The Rafter's were from Cloranshea. They had nine children: Mary, Patrick, James, Bridget, Thomas, Ellen, Daniel, Joseph, and Richard. Daniel Phelan and Honora Rafter had a farm in Connahy Rocks, Kilkenny (plot 12A) which they leased from Joseph Strangways. Honora continued to operate the farm after Daniel Phelan passed away sometime before 1847 judging by the marriage records for Patrick, James, Daniel, Joseph. She died on March 11, 1892, in Conahy Rocks, Kilkenny, Ireland, at the age of 96. Mary Phelan was the only child of Daniel Phelan and Honora Rafter that stayed in Ireland after the famine. Mary Phelan married Andrew Tynan on 15 Feb 1847 • Conahy, Kilkenny, Ireland. Mary Phelan could have been the eldest child since she was the first to marry. The valuation records of 1860 show that plot 12A is leased by Andrew Tynan. The valuation records of 1885 show that plot 12A is leased by Daniel Tynan

    Travelling Folk in the 1930s

Between 1937 and 1939, primary school pupils across the Republic of Ireland interviewed the elderly in their neighborhood to collect and record local stories and folklore from the 19th century. "The Schools Collection" as it became known is held by the Dúchas Folklore Collection in UCD and is and has been digitized online at duchas.ie. One of the topics schoolchildren were asked to write about were "Travelling Folk" or An Lucht Siúil.

Here is a selection of what "settled" children wrote about travelers in the late 1930s.
