Henry Dowdle (hatter) lived in Fairgreen Westport 1797-1867. My Gt gt grandfather William his son born Westport 1843 and died in England 1908. On the UK census it showed a sister Catherine Dowdle born 1836 It showed their uncle John Dowdle 1792 which I assume was Henry's brother. There may of been another brother Patrick 1789. I have hit a brick wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kildavnet Freeholders List

A unique Census Substitute for the townland of Carrickkildavnet aka Kildavnet in 1829. This Freeholders List can provide useful information about those who held enough land to register to vote. While the smaller tenant farmers who suffered most during the Great Famine won't appear on this list, there may be a few surprises included here (that didn't appear on Tithe applotment records). These could be partners on a freehold lease. Can you find your ancestor's name below?

Famine Distress in Ireland

In the summer of 1822 a bad potato crop and limited employment opportunities created famine conditions in the west and south-west of Ireland. The partial failure of the potato crop in 1821 precipitated a food crisis, with extreme distress occurring in 9 counties from late April until mid-August 1822. In the month of July alone, over one million poor people in counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo, were estimated to be living on the verge of starvation in the month of July alone. Starvation and typhus caused deaths in many parts of the countryside and rural towns.
