Eliza Cochran was born about 1838 in the Parish of Mullin in County Monaghan, according to her marriage certificate.. There is no longer a parish there, however the village is being rebuilt.

It is believed that ELiza and her parents were in the workhouse in Monaghan and that her parents died there. She then travelled to Melbourne, Australia from Southhampton on the ship Tudor where she was assigned to a Mr Carlmore of 4 Great Bolton St, Melbourne. This may possibly have been one of the ships under the Earl Grey Orphan Scheme transporting young female orphans from Ireland to Australia in the 1850's.

By October 1856 she was in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia marrying John Young Couper, a young Scotsman who had qualified as a doctor in Glasgow. He emigrated on the ship Ottile in 1852. On his marriage certificate he claims to be a manufacturer and merchant in Spring Creek, Beechworth, Victoria.

By the time their first child is born in 1857 his occupation is listed as a miner (gold, we assume). He followed this occupation for the remainder of his life with Eliza travelling with him through the goldfields in Victoria and NSW. Eliza settled in Goulburn and after the death of John Couper in 1877 she married James Kearns Young in 1878.

Eliza died at the age of 82 in Croydon in Sydney, NSW, Australia on 4 May 1918.

Between 1937 and 1939, primary school pupils across the Republic of Ireland interviewed the elderly in their neighborhood to collect and record local stories and folklore from the 19th century. "The Schools Collection" as it became known is held by the Dúchas Folklore Collection in UCD and is and has been digitized online at duchas.ie. One of the topics schoolchildren were asked to write about were "Travelling Folk" or An Lucht Siúil.

Here is a selection of what "settled" children wrote about travelers in the late 1930s.
