Daniel lived in Glasgow for very much if not all of his adult life.  He was born in Ireland and seems to have migrated to Scotland in around 1870.  He married Jane McMullen and had one daughter, then after Jane's death not long afterwards he married Elizabeth Blaney and had further children, several of whom had families of their own.  Both wives were also Irish but presumably met in Glasgow.  Daniel died in Glasgow on 6 April 1916.  He was a cab driver (or similar driving occupations such as carter) throughout his adult life.

Ages shown on censuses and certificates in Scotland variously put his birthdate back to 1850/1, 1851/2 or 1853/4 (depending on when his birthday fell in the year); most commonly 1853/4.  His parents on his death certificate are shown as Michael Cullen, labourer (deceased) and Catherine Cullen nee McKeogh (deceased), though on other documents his mother is named as Susannah.  On his marriage certificate to Jane on 15 July 1872, his age is shown as 20, his parents Michael Cullen, farmer (not noted as deceased) and Susanna Cullen nee McGeogh (deceased). On his marriage certificate to Elizabeth on 24 April 1876, the parental details are the same, and Daniel's age is shown as 24.
