Daniel Collins was born in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1828. Barbara Diver, his wife, was born in Ardageny, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1835. They were married in the late 1850's. Eight children, seven boys and one girl, were born to them before they left Ireland - Charles, Patrick, Daniel, William, John, Sara, Joseph and Bernard.
Some of Daniel's brothers had already emigrated to Canada, and no doubt, sent back reports of what a promising future the country offered, as compared with the small and poor farms in Ireland. The older sons became restless and eager to come to Canada to seek their fortunes. After consultation with their Pastor, Daniel and Barbara decided that it was in the best interests of all for the whole family to emigrate to Canada. But before taking the final step, Daniel, in 1881, made a trip across the Atlantic to visit his brothers, to see first-hand what the possibilities were, and probably to earn enough money to bring the family over. He must have been favourably impressed, for on April 28, 1882, the whole family embarked from the port of Londonderry for Canada, aboard the Peruvian.
Eventually they landed at Point Levis in the St. Lawrence on May 23. From there they made their way to the home of the Collins Family in Huntington Township, Hastings County, Ontario. James, the youngest member of the family, was born there on October 3, 1882.
