William Cochran

Born
1 Jan 1782
Died
3 Sept 1823
Gender
Male
Place of migration
Migrated to/Born in UK

William's children reported in US census records that their father was born in Ireland. I have found an emigration record from 1811 New Jersey, USA, that MAY be a match, for a William Cochrane from County Mayo; on the same ship were Henry & Robert Cochrane. (This is a long shot, but as he later married a woman from NJ, and her family moved with her & William to SE Indiana, I'm guessing William might have connected with the Edwards family in NJ before moving south and then west.)

In about 1814, he served about 5 months in the Virginia Militia (8th Regiment, 4th Brigade). He married Deborah Edwards (b 1821 NJ) in Clark County, Indiana on 26 Oct 1815.

William's year of birth is based on the average of the range of ages indicated in the 1820 US census, at which time he had settled in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. His will was written on 30 Aug and proved on 20 Sept, 1823, also in Floyd County, IN. I have not been able to find a death or burial record for him.

    Kildavnet Freeholders List

A unique Census Substitute for the townland of Carrickkildavnet aka Kildavnet in 1829. This Freeholders List can provide useful information about those who held enough land to register to vote. While the smaller tenant farmers who suffered most during the Great Famine won't appear on this list, there may be a few surprises included here (that didn't appear on Tithe applotment records). These could be partners on a freehold lease. Can you find your ancestor's name below?
