Catherine "Katie" Hand married Thomas Charles Dignan on 4 July 1874 in Waukon, Iowa. They had five children all born in Winnishiek County, Iowa: George (1875-1901), Edward M (1877-1968), Loretta Josephine (1878-1975), Alice Ursula (1880-1974), Cleophus Jane (1885-1954).

They moved to Orient, Faulk County, South Dakota in 1885 (after the birth of their youngest in January 1885). They were some of the earliest residents of the Orient township.

Thomas and Katie's oldest son George went missing on 1 October 1901 in Sioux City, Iowa on his trip home to Orient, SD after selling cattle in Chicago. The mystery of his disappearance was never solved.

Katie lived to the age of 99 and was well known in the region for her advanced age.
