Son of Dennis McManus and Margaret McGaugh. Brother of the Macken transportee Patrick McManus (1806 - 1856). Bernard married Ann Martin on 20 June 1836 in Knockninny. The couple departed Belfast aboard the ship Mandarin on 10 June 1838, together with their first son, Dennis, who had been born a year earlier and was baptised in Fermanagh on 15 March 1837. Baby Dennis died during the voyage on 19 August 1838. Bernard and Ann arrived in Sydney on 19 October 1838.

Bernard worked (1) for Mr Bucknell at Hunters River and (2) for Mr Loder at Wylies Flat near Singleton, New South Wales.

Bernard, Ann and one male child under two years of age (Patrick) are listed in the 1841 census of New South Wales as residing in the County of Durham, District of Patrick's Plains. Bernard's occupation at the time of the census is listed as "shepherd", and his religion was Roman Catholic. Following baby Patrick, eight more children were born to Bernard and Ann while living at Wylies Flat.

In 1872, Bernard was listed in the Greville's Post Office Directory of New South Wales as a farmer residing at Mount Royal near Singleton. Subsequently, the family moved to the Cockburn River near the village of Moonbi in the Tamworth district of New South Wales.

Bernard's New South Wales death certificate registration number 9655/1878 states that he died at Tamworth on 21 December 1877. His wife, Ann, died very shortly after him at Cockburn River on 4 January 1878, New South Wales death registration number 9668/1878.

Information on the New South Wales birth certificate of the youngest child, Catherine Jane McManus, born at Wylies Flat on 27 February 1859, lists children born to Bernard and Ann while living at Wylies Flat as Patrick, Mary Ann, Margaret, Edward, Bernard, John, James and Peter.
