Judith Bowe was born in November 1797, likely in or near Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny — the Bowe surname is well documented in Lisdowney townland in the mid-19th century (Griffith's Valuation lists several Bowe households there). Family tradition holds she married Thomas Grogan on 11 June 1820 at the Parish of Lisdowney, though no surviving parish marriage register confirms this date (Lisdowney's surviving marriage records have a documented gap covering 1820).
Judith and Thomas had eight children, the first of whom, John, was born in 1821 and died in infancy. Family history holds that Judith and Thomas emigrated to the United States in 1823 with three of Thomas's brothers, and that their son Edward William Grogan was born during the voyage — this detail is unverified by any surviving record.
The family settled first in Lockport, New York, then Straitsville, Perry County, Ohio. Judith died on 20 April 1868, having outlived Thomas by 15 years. Researching this family ahead of a visit to Lisdowney — any information on the Bowe family of the area would be very welcome.
